[Pic 6] Cwmorthin Quarry - Lake Adit - Floor 1 North (1985)

This is the main entrance into the underground workings as it looked in 1985 - at that time still being used as an exit for bringing out the slate, with a cut up old Land Rover as transport! This pic doen't really show it but there is a huge mountain of very loose waste slate, stretching high up to floor 5 level, sat atop this adit. Compare this pic with others taken later on to see how the entrance has altered since falling into disuse.

Outside the still standing (and fully roofed) former Stables come Compressor house is one of several slate wagons, each with loose double flanged wheels, complete with a short section of intact tramway.
