Llyn y Gadair Slate Quarry 01 - Approaching by Lôn Gwyrfai (2015)

This section is a follow up to the Llyn y Gadair 1990 pages and, as mentioned there, the name Llyn y Gadair is often used to cover the workings of both Llyn y Gader and Gader Wyllt quarries. The site is located near Rhyd Ddu, close to the western shore of Llyn-y-Gadair, and nowadays is easilly accessed by the new Lôn Gwyrfai path that begins opposite Rhyd Ddu station, crosses the Afon Gwyrfai, then uses the old causeway / tramway to the quarries. The view above shows the approach along the causeway on a unusually sunny day in 2015.* As usual my labrador is getting impatient with me pausing for photos and is seen dashing back to get me to move on!

* This section is entitled 2013, drawing from several walks past the site that year, but thanks to the Lôn Gwyrfai it is now hard not to return and so other more recent photos may be added.

Llyn y Gadair Slate Quarry 02 - Llyn y Gader site (2013)

On a dull 2013 day, Photo 2 shows the old stone building (still reasonably intact in 1990) in its now ruinous state with the main tip and incline behind. Lôn Gwyrfai veers left here and continues through the site on its way to Bedgelert.

Llyn y Gadair Slate Quarry 03 - Mill pillars (2013)

On a more sunny 2013 day is this view of the unfinished lower mill with its row of still standing pillars. Note the rubble still piled up inside the mill area waiting to be used in its construction.

Llyn y Gadair Slate Quarry 04 - Modern view (2013)

The scene above is a modern copy of the same scene in 1990 (Page 1 - Pic 4) and shows that the unfinished mill remains are still as they were. Other than Lôn Gwyrfai, the biggest change is in the growth of trees in the far distance.

Llyn y Gadair Slate Quarry 05 - Tramway (2013)

This is the level 1 tramway heading off around the hillside to the undeveloped undergound workings that were abandoned long before the quarry closed. Compare with the same view from 1990, Page 2; Photo 8 - Naturaly the section of the bridge rail i found here is long gone!
